BMW R 1250 R

Introduction

They say dogs are men’s best friends. I should know, I have six. Having ridden the BMW R 1250 RS the previous week, the wind in my face and on my chest was undeniably noticeable on the naked version, the BMW R 1250 R. It now made sense why dogs always stick their heads out when driving in cars.

The new BMW R 1250 R is as free as the vast rolling hills of our country. As confident as the rivers that flow in our valleys. It is for the bold, the free spirited and those that live a life beyond any worry. Whether fuel prices go up, or whether the corona virus has hit our African shores, they live to ride another day. It is the epitome of absolute freedom.

Exterior and styling

Usually, being naked in public is not acceptable, unless in the guise of the BMW R 1250 R. A bold single headlight unit dominates the front. And in the same halogen unit are two LED daytime running lights. Above the light is a tiny plastic plate that bears the “R” decal, and just about the only thing between you, and mother nature. Some of the mosquitos that miss your eyes, wide open mouth and chest, will eventually collect on this plate.

They say less is more, and this is true concerning the naked BMW. The gold front folks not only look the part but ooze masculinity and practicality. Somewhere, somehow two signature BMW LED indicators are miraculously placed, on either side.

The side view exposes a work of craftsmanship, beautiful detail of the frame and how every part of the bike fits perfectly. But, from here onwards one does see resemblance of the RS brother.

Performance

Of the three siblings BMW is offering, namely the RT, RS and the R, the R is the naughtiest of the lot. Is it the black sheep of the family? Riding the R is much lighter to any of the three brothers. It is the kind of bike that will have you explaining more excuses to the metro police. This is the most explaining you would have to do in your lifetime.

The 1250 (1254 cc) engine seems more potent and aggressive in this bike. Suddenly, the 100 kW of power and 143Nm of torque feels like the dash of a dog running for the open gate, after breaking loose. Addition of the quick shift gearbox technology only adds fuel to the excitement. ShiftCam technology is also in the R version.

One of the only features available on the R, is the inclusion of a sports option on the 5.7-inch TFT screen. This sees mere mortals leaning into corners more than usual and braking harder, as braking distance and lean angles are both displayed on the sports screen. Deep down in our hearts bikers are people that love pushing limits.

My overall impression

The BMW R 1250 R is any bikers’ dream. It is an awesome daily runner that is as loyal as men’s best friend. In every gear, and at every throttle turn, the R is just as eager to let you chase the wind, just like a dog would dash for a stick. Only for the stick to be thrown away, again.

Initially, I had my doubts about the effectiveness halogen headlight as opposed to the LED fitted in the RS, but this proved very acceptable. I have made a habit of ridding at night with test bikes because the reality is that occasionally, we are forced to.

The R is obviously lighter and more athletic. It is the bike of choice for early Saturday morning breakfast runs. Or be the Sunday afternoon easy outrides to the countryside. The direct interaction with the elements was another pleasant reminder why I rode, and how insignificant I am compared to the rest of the universe.

So, who let the dogs out?
